SCBA CELEBRATES 60 YEARS OF SERVICE!

WCOS (Coumbia) Control Room in 1953

In recognition of our 60th anniversary, the Association engaged in two very special projects.  One that reflects on our rich history and tradition, one that demonstrates our commitment to tomorrow's broadcasters.

REFLECTING ON OUR RICH HISTORY AND TRADITION

Our focus in 2007 was to reflect on our rich history and tradition.  We launched a project to collect vintage audio and video material from around the state--a comprehensive history of the broadcast industry from its emergence in the 1920's through today.  The collection includes recordings of classic programs, taped histories of stations, vintage photos, interviews with dozens of industry pioneers and more.  For an overview of South Carolina broadcast history, you'll enjoy the in-depth article written by Professor Haney Howell of Winthrop University who managed the research project for SCBA.  Collecting material for the Archives is an ongoing project.  We welcome contributions from our members and others with an interest in broadcast history in South Carolina.  If you have items to contribute, please contact Professor Howell at howellh@winthrop.edu or the SCBA office at 803-732-1186.

COMMITTED TO TOMORROW'S BROADCASTERS

In 2008, SCBA looks to the future of our industry and pledges our support to the next generation of broadcasters.  The SCBA Educational Foundation was founded in 1982 and its purpose is to provide scholarships for broadcast students at colleges, technical colleges and universities in the state that offer broadcast training.  Traditionally, the Foundation funds approximately $35,000 in scholarships and grants each year to state broadcast education programs.  The Foundation established an endowment in 2004 with a one-million-dollar target.  Reaching this goal will allow the scholarship program to continue in perpetuity.  Assets of the endowment are now over $900,000--well within reach of our million-dollar goal!  It is our mission to reach this goal in 2008, our 60th anniversary year.  We invite you to be a part of this exciting effort which will have a major impact on the broadcasters of tomorrow.

The endowment has been primarily funded through gifts from SCBA.  To insure the continued growth of our Educational Foundation and to further broaden the educational programs it can support, SCBA has created the Fellows Program that allows individuals and corporations that support our industry to make tax-deductible contributions to the Foundation.  Donations can be made in various denominations, and can be one-time contributions paid in full or in a self-directed payment schedule over months or years.

Please consider making a gift to the SC Broadcasters Educational Foundation Endowment to help us reach our million-dollar goal.  There could be no better way to celebrate our 60 years of service than to fulfill this pledge to the broadcasters of the future.
