South Carolinians received
strong support during natural disasters like Hurricane Hugo.
The unprecedented devastation from Hurricane Katrina creates a deep
sense of obligation to provide our resources to help these disaster
relief efforts. We strongly encourage all South Carolina TV
and radio broadcasters to join this initiative in keeping with the
strong commitment to community service that is hallmark of our industry
and our association.
If your station has launched
such an effort and partnered with various agencies to send money,
water, food, medicine and other supplies to the devastated Gulf
Coast, please document your station's activities and report them
to SCBA so we can continue to highlight your commitment to community
service. Send stories, news releases and digital photographs to
Karen Nettles. The list below
summarizes relief efforts executed by SC broadcasters in recent
weeks.
Citadel Broadcasting
(Charleston) and WCSC-TV (Charleston)

listeners and viewers to take five-dollar bills to the local Regions

the York County community to do the same or better. The stations
also interviewed representatives from the local chapters of the
American Red Cross, United Way and the Salvation Army. Live
phone interviews were conducted with two York County government
officials on the ground in Mississippi assisting with relief efforts
and PSAs for public and private organizations holding legitimate
events to raise funds for relief are being broadcast. During
the first week of the "Hometown Cares" campaign, the initiative
raised $126,485. The effort is now being coordinated by the
local United Way and the organization reports a new total each Thursday.

local restaurant where a portion of the proceeds went to the American
